Giovanni Maria del Bussetto

Violin Maker 1640-1681
CremonaItaly

Giovanni Maria del Bussetto was active fromcirca1670 tocirca1680 in Cremona. His instruments are extremely rare, but those that survive are recognisable by their distinctivefholes and rather square outline. Although Bussetto's instruments vary in quality, his best work is comparable to that of many of his great contemporaries

and has occasionally led to his work being attributed to other Cremonese makers. The particularly fine varnish of the circa 1680 violin on pp. 90-91 was no doubt a factor in its misattribution to Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andrece.
