Although born into a prolific violin-making family, .r-1.Antonio Gagliano was not blessed with the talent of his brother Giuseppe. The instruments that the brothers made in collaboration seldom achieve the visual attractiveness and standard of execution of those made by Giuseppe alone. The difference in workmanship can be seen by comparing the scroll on page 231 with the scroll shown below.
 
The violin circa 1805 would appear to be a true collabo- ration between the two brothers, whereas the circa 1800 violin is dominated by the hand of Giuseppe, and is difficult to distinguish from the circa 1775 Giuseppe on pp. 232-233.
