Dictionary of Makers

As was the case with most of the Roman makers of his day, Francesco Emiliani took the Stainer model as his principal inspiration. There is also a strong similarity in his work to that of David Tecchler, his better-known con- temporary, although no formal link has been established. Tecchler on pp. 572-573 are not only near contemporar- ies, but also show a striking similarity in model and work- manship. This would explain the much-published theory that the rarity of Emiliani's instruments is due to the fact that many of them bear the label of Tecchler, yet all three featured here retain their original labels.
